A writer, not a reader

Is it possible to become a good writer, if you are not an avid reader?

This is my story. I am neither a good writer nor a book lover. Also, this is my first story on Medium. Therefore, this article is probably not going to be as entertaining but I hope I get my thoughts across. I have heard a lot that writing beautifully is a beautiful way to express yourself. And thats what attracts me towards writing. So I’ve tried writing.

However, I am not so much of a reader. I did read a few books in college and few after that, but I never formed a habit of reading books regularly. I guess most people find the love for books in their childhood itself. I personally have never met anyone who has discovered the passion for reading at an adult age. Although I have seen people become interested in writing at an adult age. I belong to the latter group only.

Now to be a good writer, is it important to have read a lot of books?

Since I am not an avid reader, I cannot comment on what all reading can do to your personality. Though I have observed that people who read a lot are better at expressing themselves and usually have something or the other to contribute in any conversation. So assuming it is true that you gain a certain type of personality by reading. But is it also to say that you cannot achieve the same through your own life experiences or other means such as cinema or tv. Moreover, is it also to say that the kind of mandatory qualities needed in a good writer can only come from reading?

I have always felt a certain colour or expression missing from my writing. I feel that my writing is a tad flat or is not as engaging for others to read. To change this, do I need to first focus on making a habit of reading?

Technically I do feel that reading and writing are two sides of the same coin. By reading, you are ought to develop a sense of what makes it a good write-up. And writing probably helps in understanding the genuineness of other writings.

I would love to read your thoughts or advice on this.

I like different things at different time. It’s starting to become a problem now.
